- Petrea volubilis is a fast-growing, semi-tropical flowering vine. Professional opinions on origin and native range vary. Experts agree it can be found naturalized in Florida, Mexico, Tropical America, the West Indies, Central America, northern and western South America, Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Hispaniola. Whether it originally grew within the entire range or was introduced from one area to another via travel and trade is debated.
- Petrea volubilis, also known as Sandpaper Vine or Queens Wreath is a vigorous growing vine with stunning, draping clusters of lavender-purple flowers. It blooms in two and sometimes more long lasting cycles per year, and is a great choice for quick cover.
- Care: This plant prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established but performs best with regular watering. It is not a heavy feeder, but a general-purpose fertilizer in the spring will encourage robust growth. Pruning is recommended after flowering to control its size and shape.
- Indoor Growing: This tropical vine grows large, requires the full spectrum of light 4 to 6 hours daily, high humidity, and warm temperatures with at least 10*F day/night differential, so not well suited for the average indoor growing space.
